Alcúdia is rolling out a new network of 81 CCTV cameras across the municipality as part of a major initiative to improve public safety, reduce traffic incidents and enhance the management of public spaces.
The new system was presented to Mayor Fina Linares and Councillor for Citizen Security Juan Sendín during a technical demonstration by the Local Police, showcasing how the cameras will be used to support both road safety and day-to-day municipal management.
According to the Town Hall, the cameras will be installed at strategic locations throughout the municipality. In Alcúdia’s urban areas, where traffic control falls under the responsibility of the Local Police, the system will help monitor traffic flow, assist in the investigation of road accidents and provide real-time data on vehicle movements.
The information collected will allow the council to make more informed decisions on road safety measures, including reviewing speed limits, identifying areas where traffic-calming measures may be required and improving the overall flow of traffic.
The investment comes after 202 traffic accidents have already been recorded in Alcúdia so far this year. Of these, 150 resulted in material damage only, while 52 incidents caused injuries. The council hopes the new system will help reduce the number of accidents through improved monitoring and preventative measures, while also making it easier to investigate incidents when they occur.
In the Port d’Alcúdia beach area, the cameras will serve a broader purpose. As well as supporting public safety, they will help monitor beach occupancy in real time, providing valuable information to improve the management of one of Mallorca’s busiest tourist destinations during the summer months.
The project is being carried out in coordination with the Guardia Civil, strengthening cooperation between the different emergency and security services to provide a faster and more effective response when incidents occur.
The Town Hall has also confirmed that this is only the first phase of the project, with plans already underway to expand the camera network to other parts of the municipality that are not yet covered.
As Alcúdia continues to grow as both a residential community and one of Mallorca’s leading tourist destinations, the council says the new system is designed to improve safety, support smarter traffic management and provide better information to help plan and manage public spaces throughout the year.
