Emblematic Balears

The regional minister for Business, Employment and Energy, Alejandro Sáenz de San Pedro, together with the mayor of Sa Pobla, Biel Ferragut, got together this week to present the distinctive plaques to the 12 establishments in Sa Pobla that classify them as ‘Emblemàtics Balears’ shops. 

Emblemàtics Balears was born from the need to protect local commercial activity and, more specifically, that of the most traditional establishments in the towns.

One of the objectives of this project is to promote the uniqueness of each town through its emblematic establishments. Although the initiative focuses on listed shops, the rest of the commercial network benefits as these traditional and iconic shops bring more people to the area.

Local councils identify the shops in the municipality that meet the requirements to be emblematic, according to a manual from ADR Balears that establishes the different categories. Thus, a shop can be classified as established (with a unique product or trade), with history (with more than 75 years of existence) and with heritage (with outstanding interior and exterior heritage elements, as well as intangible value). Establishments that meet these three categories are considered ’emblematic’.

Currently, there are 33 municipalities in all of the Balearic Islands with a total of 385 listed businesses. In the north, Alcúdia has seven, Pollensa has nine, Selva has one and now Sa Pobla has 12.
