The Pollensa Townhall are teaming up with the Balearic Government to create the first ever Tuna Fair — the Mostra de la Tonyina — with the aim of promoting this local produce
The Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment, together with the Council of Pollensa and the Pollensa Fishermen’s Association, are organizing the first edition of the Sabors de la Badia (1st Pollensa Tuna Fair), with the main objective of promoting awareness of this local produce from the Bay of Pollensa. The gastronomic event will take place on May 24 and 25 in Puerto Pollensa.
During the presentation, Simonet emphasized that “participation in fairs like this one demonstrates, once again, the Government’s commitment to promoting the products of our land. These types of initiatives highlight the quality of this local product, which also helps maintain traditional production structures, such as our fishermen’s guilds. It’s important to remember that tuna has a fishing quota of around 50 tons annually in the Balearic Islands.”Â
The fair will offer a gastronomic experience with local restaurateurs and chefs, as well as local wineries. Among the activities planned for the fair are live cooking sessions led by various chefs and restaurants from the Bay of Pollensa, with dishes featuring tuna as the main ingredient, and a wine pairing from the Can Xanet and Vinyes Mortitx wineries. In addition, the Regional Ministry has scheduled a live demonstration of “ronqueo” (the sound produced when tuna is cut), led by Toni Fiol, an expert in this traditional technique, who will also explain the process step by step. Once this activity is over, the tuna used in the demonstration will be auctioned off to the audience.
The program for the 1st Mostra de la Tonyina includes musical and sporting activities, among others, as well as an information booth to showcase the new nautical vocational training program offered at the Clara Hammerl Secondary School in Puerto Pollensa.
