You may have seen an increase in purple in the streets, from dressed up Palm Trees to events posters everywhere – local groups and councils appear to be taking the movement seriously. So what is International Women’s Day all about?
What is International Women's Day (IWD)?

“IWD is a specific day dedicated to the advancement of women worldwide.
“Marked by millions of people on March 8, IWD celebrates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender equality.
“IWD provides an important platform to engage with communities, reflect on progress, and commit to positive action. Participation in IWD ensures progress toward equality remains on the global agenda and positive action prevails.
“IWD has a long and powerful history of collective action, with many groups, countries, and bodies having actively contributed to its evolution. Today, IWD is a highly visible worldwide occurrence with significant mainstream awareness, marked by groups worldwide in a wide variety of ways.”
Here in Mallorca, the Consell de Mallorca’s manifesto highlights the:
“need to dedicate time and attention to a reality that is still in force and that we are working on, in order to achieve full, real and effective equality between women and men.” It also highlights that “8M is still necessary today, in 2025, because there are too many existing situations that prevent the free development of women in equality and without discrimination.”
“March 8 is a new opportunity to demonstrate the civic and political commitment to equality between men and women, to say loud and clear that the injustice of discrimination has no place in Mallorcan society.”
The Consell's Commitment to Equality
The Consell unveiled its programme of events last week while unfurling a banner at the Consell de Mallorca headquarters. It took the opportunity to announce its commitment to equality with an increase in the budget allocated to the Island Directorate of Families, which grows by 29% compared to the 2024 financial year. This investment is for the “improvement of island services and it will guarantee more efficient care for women who need it.”
This includes the Libertas Centre, a resource that offers comprehensive, free and 24/7 care to victims of sexual violence, providing psychological, social and legal support. Its opening, co-financed with Next Generation EU funds, responds to the need for safe and specialised spaces in Mallorca, facilitating the recovery of affected women.
Main Events in Mallorca
To commemorate International Women’s Day, almost 100 events have been organised in different municipalities in Mallorca. In Palma, the round table “Women and the media”, which took place on 5 March at the CaixaForum, brought together leading professional journalists to discuss their experience in the sector and the issues that coexist in their work.
Here in the North, in Pollensa various talks, poetry and workshops, as well as storytelling for kids will be held over the coming days.
In Alcudia on the 8th March itself, there are activities ranging from an aromatherapy workshop, yoga, an embroidery exhibition and workshop, wellness talks, screen printing, music, cookery, all starting from 10am in the Plaza de l’Esglesia.
Campanet will also host a series of talks and workshops based on Women’s Health while in Sa Pobla, the Cursa Igualtat is a 5km race around the town. Run or walk, the event is on Sunday 9th and starts at 10:30 and leaves from Las Palmeras. Sa Pobla also has a series of talks and workshops.
