The Event in Numbers
You may have noticed more sporty types, more cyclists, more lycra than normal… it’s all thanks to the Ironman Mallorca 70.3 which takes place this weekend, Saturday 10th May.
There are no less than 3,800 athletes participating. It’s a huge amount of people made up of 72 nationalities, not to mention the 80 staff members and 600 volunteers who will be running the event.
We will also see 45 motorbikes guiding the cyclists and runners and 25 kayaks on the water. 30 judges will be overseeing everything, ensuring the Ironman rules are not broken.
Alongside this, local services will be employed: 6 ambulances, 30 police officers, and 90 members of the Civil Protection unit.
Only 13.5% of the competitors are Spanish, most are from the UK, 32% of them. 13% are German and 6.7% of them are French.
Only 18% are female.
The Ironman Mallorca 70.3 Routes
The challenge is not for the faint hearted. The 1.9km swim, covered in one lap from the beach of Puerto Alcudia, kicks off the race. With so many entering the water, start times are staggered.
Next comes the 90km cycle ride and to finish off, the 21.1km run is a three-lap affair along the streets of Puerto Alcudia.
With so many of the roads taken up for the cycle race and to a smaller extent, the half marathon (just a half marathon?!) at the end, we can expect road closures to be prepared.

The event promises to be a huge success, the general atmosphere in the lead up and during the race is infectious and watching the athletes as they cross the line is well worth the trip. After all those kms, showing up and cheering them on is the least we can do.
