On Monday, August 24 A major fire in the centre of Can Picafort on Monday morning destroyed a ground-floor business and forced residents from several homes in the building.

The fire broke out at around 11am on the corner of Avinguda Centre and Avinguda José Trias, sending a large column of black smoke over the popular resort.

Emergency services evacuated four homes, while a woman and four children who had become trapped in one of the apartments above the premises were rescued by police and the Guardia Civil.
Firefighters Worked for Hours
Fire crews from Alcúdia and Artà attended the scene, with the fire finally declared extinguished at around 5.40pm, more than six hours after it began. The commercial premises was left completely destroyed, while parts of the wider building were also affected.

One firefighter was taken to Muro Hospital after suffering an electric shock during the operation and was later discharged. Another person was treated for smoke inhalation.

The Guardia Civil has opened an investigation into the cause of the fire. Although early reports suggested it may have originated from an electrical connection associated with an air-conditioning unit, the cause has not yet been officially confirmed.

Residents were initially unable to return to their homes, although they were later allowed to enter the building to collect essential belongings and documentation.
