It may be October tomorrow, but Mallorca isn’t quite ready to give up summer.
Â
Temperatures are still reaching the low 30s across parts of the island, with Palma forecast to reach 32°C on Thursday 1 October. Along the northern coast, AEMET is forecasting highs of around 28°C on Thursday, with the possibility of rain.
Â
But there are signs that the weather is finally beginning to turn.
From summer temperatures to autumn weather
AEMET’s latest forecast for Palma shows Thursday starting cloudy, with rain becoming possible during the afternoon. Conditions then become more unsettled, with further chances of rain and cloudy skies through the following days.
Â
So while Mallorca isn’t suddenly heading into cold autumn weather, the forecast does mark a noticeable change from the prolonged run of warm, settled conditions we’ve been enjoying.
Â
And for anyone still making the most of the beach, there’s another useful detail: AEMET’s forecast for Muro puts the sea temperature at around 25°C on Thursday, so the water is certainly not giving up summer just yet.
Is this unusual for October? Not necessarily. If you haven’t lived on the island for long then you may not know, but realistically, it is anyone guess, I remember September felt like December, however, this year it has been bliss and even possibly too hot at times.
Â
October is when Mallorca’s weather traditionally becomes much more changeable. AEMET’s long-term climate data for Palma gives October an average daily maximum of 23.7°C, an average minimum of 16.6°C and around 69mm of rainfall during the month.
Â
That means temperatures around 30°C at the beginning of October are considerably warmer than the long-term October average.
Â
It also explains why October can be such an unpredictable month on the island. One day can still feel like summer, while the next brings clouds, rain and noticeably cooler temperatures.
Â
And of course, with these high temperatures, we can expect some pretty dramatic thunder storms over the coming weeks.Â
