Mallorca’s 312 Cycle Race

Northern Mallorca was once again at the centre of the cycling world this weekend as more than 8,000 riders took part in the Mallorca 312, starting from Playa de Muro in the early hours of Saturday.

Participants chose between three distances — 167km, 225km and the full 312km route, which includes around 5,000 metres of climbing through the Serra de Tramuntana. Roads across large parts of the north and mountain areas were closed to traffic to allow the event to take place safely.

At the front, Britain’s Luke Barfoot won the main 312km event in a sprint finish after close to nine hours of racing. Former professional riders, including Miguel Induráin and Alberto Contador, also took part alongside amateur cyclists.

The event continues to attract a large international field, particularly from northern Europe, and is considered a key fixture in the island’s early tourism calendar. Accommodation in areas such as Alcúdia, Playa de Muro and Pollensa was largely booked out for the weekend.

Local traffic restrictions were in place throughout the day, with access limited on several main routes until riders had passed.

Mallorca 312 remains one of the largest “amateur” cycling events in Europe and a significant date for northern Mallorca at the start of the season.
