A new demonstration focusing on Mallorca’s tourism model has been announced for Sunday 26 July, with campaign group Menys Turisme, Més Vida (“Less Tourism, More Life”) calling for supporters to gather in Palma at 7pm.
The organisers say there are still “more than enough reasons” to continue pushing for change, citing concerns over housing affordability, overcrowding and the pressure placed on infrastructure and resources.
The collective, which brings together a number of groups campaigning for a different approach to tourism, has also voiced concerns over recent developments at Palma Airport. In particular, they point to the addition of six new boarding gates in Terminal D for domestic and Schengen flights, arguing that the expansion could lead to even greater visitor numbers.
Further actions are expected to be announced in the coming weeks, with the organisers due to present more details at a press conference in Palma.
The debate over tourism has become one of the island’s most prominent issues in recent years. Previous demonstrations have attracted thousands of participants and have drawn international attention to the challenges Mallorca faces in balancing its tourism industry with housing, infrastructure and quality of life for residents.
Organisers insist that their campaign is not directed against tourists themselves, but rather aims to encourage a more sustainable tourism model for the future of the island. Which, if their intentions are correct than no one can say fairer than that, after all longevity should be the goal here.
With another busy summer season already underway, the discussion surrounding tourism, growth and sustainability looks set to remain firmly in the spotlight.
