The city council of Alcudia have apologized in advance for any disruption caused by the planned renovation works at Avenida Pere Mas i Reus. The works, which are part of a larger €6 million renovation project for the “strip”, will begin this week and will initially deal with the renewal of water, storm water and sanitation networks, and the start of a new design for the public spaces.
When completed, the project which runs from the main Carretera Arta coastal road will include a new pedestrian boulevard with wider pavements, bike lane, trees, new LED street lighting and urban furniture. Parking will be on one side of the road only (nearest to the big lake), and the works are expected to be completed within 7 months.
This once vibrant avenue has seen a steady decline over the last 20 years or so, with many businesses citing the rise of the “all-inclusive” holiday as a factor. This revamp will hopefully create a new and attractive environment for businesses, residents and visitors alike.
The marine rewilding project at Alcudiamar delivers great results just ten months after launch
The project, developed by Alcudiamar (the managing company of the marina) in collaboration with Ocean Ecostructures, is aimed at transforming the port environment into a more complex, diverse and healthy habitat promoting increased biomass and improved environmental quality.
This has been achieved by the installation of ten biomimetic micro-reefs ( developed by Ocean Ecostructures), which combine marine renaturalisation by replicating the functioning of a natural reef, using robotics for monitoring results, and Artificial Intelligence.
After just 10 months in operation, the first scientific results are in and show a 56% increase in the number of species in the port, a 20% rise in attached marine life, and the amount of carbon dioxide captured by the organisms colonising the micro reef has been boosted by 19%.
This progress positions Alcudiamar as a benchmark space in the development of nature-based improvements for port infrastructure.
