New Inca Bypass Agreed

The Consell de Mallorca and Inca City Council met this week to agree on the layout of the city’s urban bypass, which aims to relieve traffic congestion in the centre of the town heading towards the Serra de Tramuntana. President Llorenç Galmés presented Mayor Virgilio Moreno the different possibilities so Inca council can choose the one best for the city. They opted for an urban road that goes from the exit roundabout towards Lluc and connects with the Inca ring road, passing through Calle de Mateu Pujades where the Berenguer d’Anoia institute and the Miquel Duran school are located.

The new bypass will be just over a kilometre long and is intended to relieve congestion in the city centre. It is a long-term project and has to be started from scratch, which means environmental reports and expropriations. Now the technicians from the Consell de Mallorca and those from the City Council will specify the route and the necessary infrastructure.

Llorenç Galmés, president of the Consell de Mallorca, also announced that the 2014 northern bypass project, rejected by many residents and by the City Council itself due to its high impact, will be discarded. This project meant building a ring road around Inca on rustic land. Galmés has assured that he will propose eliminating this project from the Sectoral Master Plan for Roads.

President Galmés said in his statement: “The maxim of this Council of Mallorca is to listen to each and every one of the municipalities of Mallorca. That is why we are here today to announce a historic agreement with the City Council of Inca for the layout of the future urban bypass, after 16 years of controversy and debate… I am very pleased to be able to unblock, after three legislative terms, this project. We have put various proposals on the table of the City Council and they have chosen the one that goes from the Lluc road, passing through the Berenguer d’Anoia institute. Llorenç Galmés has also added that the project of 2014, which had a significant social response, is discarded and we will propose its replacement in the Sectoral Master Plan for Roads.”

Mayor Virgilio Moreno has also expressed his satisfaction with the agreement and consensus between administrations. “It is the first time that a Council president has come to Inca and we have reached a consensus of this nature to promote an urban bypass that can improve traffic in our city,” he said.
