The good news? A little rain doesn’t have to put a stop to your plans. From indoor adventures to cosy escapes, there are plenty of ways to stay busy and enjoy the island—no sunshine required. Here are some ideas to help you swap staring out of the window for a day well spent.
ARTS & CRAFTS: Paper Mache
Materials needed:
- A large piece of cardboard (flattened cardboard box)
- Scissors
- Newspaper or tissue
- Large plastic bottle or a kitchen roll
- Any time of flour
- Warm water
- Large bowl
- Paint (optional)
There are plenty of ways to keep little ones entertained indoors, and this one is always a hit—fun, creative, and wonderfully messy in the best way.
Start by making your papier-mâché mixture. In a large bowl, combine two cups of flour with one cup of warm water and mix until you achieve a thick, smooth consistency. If needed, adjust by adding a little more flour or water.
Next, prepare your base. Take a sturdy piece of cardboard and fix your chosen structure—either a bottle or an empty kitchen roll tube—securely in the centre. This will form the core of your creation.
Tear your newspaper into long strips, then dip each strip into the flour mixture, making sure it’s coated but not overly soggy.
Begin building your shape by placing the strips from the top of the bottle or tube down to the base, creating a sloped, volcano-like form. Continue layering the strips around the entire structure, allowing each layer to dry before adding the next to prevent it from collapsing. For a quicker process, you can use a hairdryer to speed up drying time.
Once your structure is fully built and completely dry, it’s time for the best part—painting and decorating your masterpiece.
