The Balearic Government is promoting the connection of Sa Pobla to Mallorca's main drinking water network with this new project proposal.
The proposal, with a budget of 217,002 euros, is financed by the Sustainable Tourism Tax programme 2024-2025 and aims to improve the water supply to the municipality of Sa Pobla, connecting it to the drinking water network on the island.Â
The Regional Ministry of the Sea and the Water Cycle has launched the contracting process for the drafting of the project to connect the municipality of Sa Pobla to Mallorca’s main drinking water network. This initiative is part of the entity’s strategy to improve water resource management in the Balearic Islands, reduce pressure on aquifers, and ensure a continuous, high-quality drinking water supply in the North of Mallorca.
The budget for the tender is €179,340.73 (€217,002.28 including VAT) and will be fully financed through the 2024-2025 Sustainable Tourism Tax programme, as part of the Pact for High-Rise Water Management and Resource Guarantee.
The approval of the initiation of the project complies with and fulfills the collaboration protocol signed between the President of the Balearic Islands Government and the Mayor of Sa Pobla, with the aim of solving the drinking water supply problems by connecting to the high-water network managed by ABAQUA.
This action continues the solutions undertaken to improve the water cycle in the municipality, such as the comprehensive remodeling of the treatment plant, which was visited on the same day the protocol was signed, May 22.
This project is particularly relevant in a context of drought, with a decrease in groundwater resources in quantity or quality, as is happening in Sa Pobla with the presence of nitrates. It also responds to the need to replace groundwater extractions with non-conventional sources, such as desalinated water. In addition to improving public services and optimizing the performance of the Alcúdia desalination plant (IDAM), this project will contribute to the recovery of aquifers and groundwater bodies by reducing current extractions.
The drafting of the project will have a maximum execution period of 180 days and will be processed through an open procedure.
With this action, the Ministry of the Sea and the Water Cycle complies with the CAIB agreements and reaffirms its commitment to efficient, sustainable, and responsible management of water resources, moving toward a more resilient water model adapted to the environmental and social challenges of the Balearic Islands.
