The Consell de Mallorca and Balearic tax authorities have signed an agreement to improve the fight against illegal tourism. The objective is to improve the processing and collection of fines, to facilitate management and be more effective in the prosecution of illegal rentals.
The President of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, and the Vice President of the Balearic Islands Government and Minister of Economy, Finance, and Innovation, Antoni Costa, signed a collaboration agreement on Monday between the island’s institution and the Balearic Islands Tax Agency (ATIB) to improve the processing and collection of fines related to illegal offers within the tourism sector.
As Galmés explained, the Tourism Department of the Consell de Mallorca faced the problem that a large percentage of these notifications were unsuccessful, mainly due to errors in the address used to report the violation. As a result, the processing of fines was prolonged and sometimes completely avoided — a percentage of fines were never collected.
From now on, thanks to this agreement, Tourism will collaborate with the ATIB, which has access to data and resources that will allow it to become more effective in the fight against illegal tourist rentals in Mallorca. As a result, the Consell de Mallorca will be much more efficient and effective in this type of management, thus discouraging illegal activity.
The objective is for the ATIB to now collect fines within a voluntary period and transfer the funds to the Consell. This assistance will allow the Consell de Mallorca to be much more effective, enabling it to draw on more resources and the experience of the ATIB.
It’s hoped this will put an end to the high percentage of failed notifications, as the ATIB has much more data to carry out the work. President Galmes said in his statement that signing the agreement would eliminate, “this activity that so disrupts coexistence” and “shakes the market, affecting all those who do things properly on our island, which is the vast majority.”
