11 new traffic panels have been placed in stratgic locations on Mallorca's roads with information on parking spaces in an attempt to avoid overcrowding.
The President of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, attended the launch of parking monitoring in Sóller, Sa Calobra, and Cala Tuent today. The measure will include 11 new traffic panels with parking information strategically located along roads to inform drivers of the parking status and, if they are full, to help them find alternatives along their route.
The aim of the new traffic panels is to prevent overcrowding in these areas during the summer as part of an effort to reduce some of the issues that come with mass tourism, promoting sustainable mobility, and is one of the recommendations of the traffic load study presented by the Consell de Mallorca last October.Â
The monitoring system will be managed from the Sóller tunnel control room. This is the first pilot initiative, and the Consell de Mallorca intends to expand it to other locations in the coming seasons.Â
"Today we are launching the parking monitoring system, a recommendation from the load study, whose main objective is to provide a solution to three locations that experience severe vehicle congestion during the summer, causing their parking to become clogged up. With these 11 information panels, we can prevent vehicle backups if the parking lots in Sóller, Cala Tuent, and Sa Colobra are full, and we give drivers the opportunity to change their route. In this way, we are also promoting more sustainable mobility by minimizing traffic jams in these locations." Â
Location of the New Traffic Panels
There will be two parking information panels on the VÃa de Cintura road. One will be located near Carrer de Aragó, heading towards Andratx, and the other will be located near the Son Rapinya exit. Both will inform drivers heading towards Sóller and the Inca motorway.Â
At the entrances to Inca, both from Palma and Alcudia, there will also be panels informing about the status of the Sa Calobra and Cala Tuent parking lots.Â
On the Sóller road, there will be a mobile panel at the Palmanyola roundabout and another at the entrance to the tunnel. These panels will inform drivers when the town’s parking lots are full, allowing them to turn around and avoid traffic jams.Â
In Sóller, we will have two more panels: one at the entrance from the Deià road and another on the Puig Major road.Â
On the MA-10 road that crosses the Serra de Tramuntana mountains, there will be parking monitoring panels at the Pollença exit towards Lluc and on the Sa Calobra road. Finally, there will also be another panel in Caimari informing about the parking status of Cala Tuent and Sa Calobra.
