History of Wines in Mallorca

Wines have been produced in Mallorca for over 2000 years and during that time the industry has had to overcome many challenges to become the dynamic movement that it is today.

The Romans were the first to introduce larger scale organised production around 100 BC and 160 years later the famous Roman polymath Pliny the elder declared in his seminal work “natural histories” that “Balearic wines ranked equal to the finest wines of Italy!”.

For over 300 years of Moorish rule, despite religious prohibitions the vineyards were maintained for “eating grapes” and following the Christian conquest in 1229 new licences for cultivation were granted and production increased.

When the dreaded Phylloxera bug devastated most of the european vineyards in the 1860’s Mallorca ramped up production and exports, filling the gap in the market, only for the bug to find its way here in 1891; within a year nearly 90% of the islands 30 hectares of vines had been destroyed! Many farmers stayed away from grapes and replanted with almond, olives or carobs instead. Today Mallorca has close to 80 wineries (2 to 3 thousand hectares)

Today's Wines of Mallorca

Many of today’s most interesting vineyards are much smaller than in the past and here in the North these “boutique” bodegas produce some excellent quality wines specific to the varied terrain, soils, and micro-climates.

Like the island itself these wines combine stylish modernity with solid tradition, fresh new styles made with old heritage varieties, either alone or blended with international favourites produce beguiling, top quality wines.

Look out for local grapes such as Callet, Manto Negro, Fogoneu, Gorgollassa, Monastrell and Escursac for reds, and for the whites and roses Giro Ros, Premsal Blanc (Moll) Malvasia Aromatica and Malvasia de Banyalbufar.

Keep your eyes open though, as rare old varieties continue to be discovered. It is impossible to use a single description for Mallorca’s wines, but in general the reds are fruity, balanced and luscious whilst the whites and roses are bright with floral, fruity and mineral notes.
