Problems with Parking in Pollensa

Parking anywhere in Mallorca can be problematic but parking in Pollensa, especially on a Sunday, finding a space in the town is like finding rocking horse poo. This week controversy broke as the Pollensa Town Hall released a statement on their social media channels that the Camp de’n Brull estate, one of the largest carparks located across from the Sports Centre, with capacity for more than 200 vehicles, was to be closed due to disagreements with the owners.

The five local owners of the plot later stated that they have always intended to renovate the land and make it suitable for parking but they have been waiting for the budget to be approved, and it never happened. According to the owners, they informed the council that the rent for the land would be increased to market value (up from the €18,000 it has been paying) and sent a new contract. After four months of no news about the contract and no payment for the quarter, the owners pressed for payment. This was, in turn rejected and the council informed them they can close the carpark.

In its statement the Council said that it had been paying a rent of €18,000 for the use of the carpark, but that the owners have requested almost four times the amount.

The renovation will be carried out thanks to special regulations that allow a legal road surface to be laid that the owners wanted to apply to their land. This was granted by the council and it meant that a contracting procedure would be initiated. It’s understood that the owners would take responsibility for the cost and the council were in agreement that the cost would be reflected in the new rent. Furthermore, owners say “the council was informed that until the contract is drawn up, the rental price would be adjusted to the market price, putting the conditions in writing, to which the council did not object at any time.”

In the council statement, the new conditions were to take effect in 2025.

With the fair this weekend, when space is already stretched to the limit, the owners stress that the carpark will be available to use for free on the 8th, 9th and 10th. They also used Facebook to  reiterate the willingness to reach an agreement, assuming the cost of the adaptation and conditioning of the plot as a carpark. The council say we can expect more information on parking in the town in the coming days.
