Work Begins on New Archaeological CentreĀ
The Consell de Mallorca is carrying out archaeological studies in Sa Tanca de Can DomĆØnech, the site next door to the Roman town of Pollentia, in Alcudia during September and October. The dig will verify that there are no remains of the Roman city in the building site.
The Consell de Mallorca is working to make the Mallorca Archaeology Centre a reality as soon as possible. It will be located in Sa Tanca de Can DomĆØnech in Alcudia and will house the more than 40,000 pieces that have been found in the island’s sites and are currently in storage. It will also have multipurpose spaces equipped to provide archaeologists and researchers with all the tools they need.
The vice president of the Consell de Mallorca and Minister of Culture and Heritage, AntĆ²nia Roca, visited the site where the new building will go last week.
Roca explained that work has been underway since 1 September and, for the moment, the conclusions are satisfactory, although this investigation will continue until the end of October. Once it is verified that construction can be carried out in the area, the project can be launched.
AntĆ²nia Roca reiterated the Consellās commitment to the project which will ārehabilitate, conserve and disseminate our culture and heritage” and will be able to “centralise all the archaeological activity on the island to make it known to all Mallorcans and visitors”. All this, she insisted, while supporting the island’s archaeologists.
