Mallorca is holiday gold of the highest order and come high season the island is bursting. Normally, the population of the island is around a million people, but Mallorca is one busy place during the summer months when the population more than doubles. It is no surprise then, that the roads just get chock-a-block.
Thankfully, the bus system in Mallorca is efficient and comprehensive and getting better year on year. In 2020 the authorities launched the campaign to decarbonise public transport in the Balearics by 2050. The result is an increasing number of buses that run on Compressed Natural Gas are now on the roads. Palma has hydrogen gas powered buses too.
What’s more, every season timetables are improved and we now see more buses on the schedule with earlier start times and higher frequency to cope with the amount of people wanting to enjoy the island. Mallorca by bus is now a viable option.

The Bus Network
The system in Mallorca is comprehensive. Within Palma the public buses are run by EMT. The Palma Intermodal Station at Plaza España is the hub of all public transport and where many routes cross, including the A1 which takes you to the airport.
Outside of Palma, TIB (Transport de les Illes Balears) runs the yellow and red buses that travel around the island. Travelling north, buses stop at Inca and spread to the outlying towns. Routes can vary slightly depending on time of day. For example, Sa Pobla is added to a few of the Pollensa and Alcudia bus routes.
Why Choose the Bus?
Renting a car can get pricey. Once you’ve added up the daily rate, the insurance, fixing the little dent from the super narrow carpark entrance, the cost and the absolute headache is just not worth it. Think about the journeys you will cover, do you need your own car to get to the pool? That day-trip you’re considering, have you thought about parking? On reflection, Mallorca by bus is probably the best option.
It’s also worth noting that in order to avoid heavy traffic in areas of natural beauty during the summer months, the authorities have imposed road closures to cars. Journeys are only possible by bus. The obvious example here in the north is Formentor, where a shuttle service from Alcudia/Puerto Pollensa has been put in place.
What’s more, it’s 2024 – we need to think about the environment. The island is struggling with water supplies and highest temperatures year-on-year. Climate change is felt here. Do your bit and choose to do Mallorca by bus.

How do I buy a bus ticket and How much does it cost?
There are different types of bus tickets. A last-minute ticket bought with cash from the driver inside the bus is discouraged. It takes up valuable time and the price is set high so you don’t use this method.
Instead, the best way is to tap your bank card as you board and as you get off the bus. For example, catching the bus from Alcudia to Pollensa, will cost you €2.70 using your bank card. In cash, paying the driver, it would cost €4.50.
The airport route is pricier, Alcudia to the airport costs €8.10 paying with your bank card. Buying your ticket from the driver is €13.50.
You can also buy a bus ticket in advance online and scan the QR code (which is sent to your phone) when you board the bus. Buy online here.
If you live in Mallorca, the TIB card gives huge discounts. For 2023 and 2024, transport on TIB buses are free (with the TIB Intermodal card). When fares kick in again, the discount is 60% for general users. Students and children go free, Pensioners receive 80% discount. It is well worth heading to the Alcudia office to get your own card. Book your appointment (or cita previa) to get one.
Worth noting...
For buses with long-distance destinations, ie buses into Palma or to the airport, you won’t be able to board these for short distance trips. For example, in Puerto Pollensa you cannot board the 301 to get to Pollensa. You will need to get the smaller local bus for that – the 322.
In the summer months, timetables are mostly the same every day of the week. In the quieter months, make sure you check for weekends/holiday schedules which may differ to weekday schedules.
There is, without doubt, an increased impetus to improve and extend the bus network in Mallorca. This year, the high-season service began earlier than ever on the 22nd March. By comparison, in 2023 the service improvements for the upcoming season began on 1st April and the year before that on the 8th May. In total, 24 routes have increased frequencies and extended schedules. Buses are greener and newer and a much more welcoming choice of transport.
With this in mind, consider the bus for your upcoming trip to the island – or if you live here. Stress levels will decrease, as will parking anxiety, and the island’s environment will thank you for it.
