Pollensa Starts Work on Capitol Cinema Building

The Council of Pollensa and contractors signed on the dotted line last week marking the official start of the works on the old Capitol Cinema Building. The reform of the old cinema will see it transformed into a new multi-functional building and work is due to be carried out in a  period of 19 months, meaning it should be complete by the middle of 2026.

Can Villalonga (the old bus station which the council bought in March 2023) will be used to store construction materials to minimize inconvenience.

The new Capitol will have 242 seats and a “flexible” design in order to host different kinds of events. This reform plan, which also includes the neighboring house on Calle de Antoni Maura 25, aims to make the old cinema a multi-purpose cultural space. “The works will enhance the facade with new modern cornicing and major structural work will be carried out to reinforce the entire interior, in addition to adapting the ground floor and the two unused premises”, the council announced. The space will also be equipped with general bathrooms, dressing rooms and the storage area and all the utilities a cultural centre needs.

The total budget for the work is 5,240,000 euros, of which 1,380,000 euros are financed by the Next Generation EU fund and 400,000 euros by the Consorcio Bolsa de Alojamientos Turísticos (the non-profit body that manages tourism permits in the Balearics). A contribution of 1.6 million euros from tourist tax funds has also been requested.
