Posidonia Protection On the Up
The Posidonia Surveillance Service, which falls under the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment, has finished the 2024 season with a total of 129,497 interventions made in the Balearic Islands.
The results are thanks to technological improvements and a strengthening of coordination and collaboration with both local and national authorities. Despite adverse weather events during the months of June, August and September, which reduced the arrival of some foreign vessels, the posidonia surveillance service and the use of cartographic applications have been essential in helping optimise anchoring, especially in large vessels. Furthermore, the Posidonia Centre, in coordination with the Posidonia Phoneline, has played an essential role, managing more than 400 queries from the nautical sector and complaints from residents.
Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment, Joan Simonet, wanted to emphasise that “this year we have made progress in the protection of our posidonia meadows, reinforcing the coordination and use of new technologies, which has allowed for more efficient management and faster responses.”
This season saw an increase of environmental agents in the Posidonia Surveillance Service operations, joining the surveillance vessels in a record number of outings, which has strengthened their presence at sea, contributing to the awareness, education and sensitisation of users for the conservation of this protected species of our marine environment.
There has also been more attention on an international scale with organisations like the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), the International Union for Conservation of Nature and the Centre for Cooperation for the Mediterranean, as well as representatives of Turkey’s Ministry of the Environment. They visited the archipelago to learn about the Government’s posidonia conservation initiatives, and in particular the buoy fields. The Government of Murcia also visited the islands to share experiences and strengthen collaboration in the protection of posidonia meadows on their coast.
