Ministry of Education meeting

Sa Pobla News: High School Expansion

Son Basca Primary to introduce 1st Year of High School

Son Basca in Sa Pobla, has only ever been a primary school. Now, after a meeting with the Ministry of Education, Son Basca will host two first year ESO classes. With this decision comes the drafting of the preliminary project for the construction of secondary school classrooms in the centre.

The extension of Son Basca responds to the congestion experienced by Can Peu Blanc, the only instituto in Sa Pobla. “It is a proposal from the school and it is made by consensus with them”, the mayor of Sa Pobla, Biel Ferragut stated.

Can Peu Blanc has nine first year ESO classes. Minister for Education, Antoni Vera, admitted that Sa Pobla is “a municipality under stress in terms of schooling” and that “the educational infrastructures are receiving a lot of educational population”.

The institute is attended by students, mainly, from three municipalities: Sa Pobla, Campanet and Búger.

Ferragut was hesitant about the idea of “relieving congestion” at Can Peu Blanc in the long term. He said that the extension of Son Basca “is a small fix” and revealed that “in the long term a new site will have to be found to build a new instituto”. “We are very saturated and congested,” said the mayor.

In the long term the school will take in students up to the fourth year of compulsory secondary education. It will start this 24/25 academic year with two groups of first year students from compulsory secondary education.

Also at the meeting, it was decided that the works for the CEIP Nou – another primary school in Sa Pobla “could be put out to tender at the end of October”.
