Following the buzz of Easter celebrations across Mallorca, the island keeps the festive spirit alive with a calendar full of local fairs and traditional events. One of the highlights in the north is the much-loved Fira de Sant Francesc in Muro, taking place this year over 11th–12th April.
A Traditional Mallorcan Fair with Something for Everyone
There is a huge range of activities for all the family to enjoy, including live music, street performances, artisan markets, agricultural displays, food stalls and more. Entry to most events and activities is free. Arrive in the morning to enjoy a full day of Fiesta fun. Parking will likely be problematic (as it can be on a normal day) so be prepared for a little walk into the town itself.
To quote the Ajuntament de Muro – “The first Sunday after Easter sees the arrival of the ST FRANCIS FAIR, a fair dedicated to agriculture, crafts and livestock.
Since the late 18th century, the area around the Convent of the Minims has been filled with festivity and hustle and bustle on these days. In times past, the fairs allowed people to break from the daily grind of work and, at the same time, farmers took the opportunity to buy products that were not normally within their reach. Today, things have changed considerably, and fairs like our own in Muro must seek, whilst maintaining the tradition, new and varied offerings.
For the past few years, the cloister of the Convent has become the exhibition epicentre for a wide range of products and craft demonstrations. As part of the fair’s programme, on Saturday evening you can enjoy the traditional “rabbit descent” on the greased pole.”
Not sure exactly what some of that means, but it sounds interesting, and as we understand it there’s also a lot of eating, drinking, and generally having a really good time!
Muro is an often overlooked pueblo, but it has considerable charms and is well worth a visit – especially in fiesta mode!
