Alcudia successfully celebrated Sant Bartomeu yesterday (August 24) and local children once again experienced the magic of the Lantern Festival.
Hundreds of children walked through the old town of Alcudia with their lanterns made of
melons, watermelons, and other fruits and vegetables, keeping alive a centuries-old tradition that fills the streets with light and colour.
The origin of this fiesta lies at the end of the harvest, when children would empty out the fruit and place a candle inside to create lanterns that imitated those of the ancient night watchmen. Over time, creativity has incorporated new shapes and materials, but the spirit of the celebration remains intact.
The procession ended with a shower of candy and colorful balloons released from the balconies for all the participating children, a particularly eagerly awaited and celebrated moment. The event, which enjoyed a large turnout, was organized by the Sarau Alcudienc Association, which also offered lantern-making workshops on Sunday morning.
Mayor Josefina Linares, Councilor for Culture and Festivals Ángela Amer, and other municipal representatives attended the event. The Lantern Festival, a symbol of tradition and coexistence, remains one of the most beloved and unique events on Alcudia’s festive calendar.
