President of the Consell de Mallorca visits the historical Lluc Archives
The island institution has stated its commitment to the preservation of this important piece of the island’s cultural heritage and has doubled the budget allocated for its digitalization, which has gone from €35,000 to €70,000.
The President of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, accompanied by the Vice President and Minister of Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, and the Mayor of Escorca, Antoni Solivellas, visited the historical archive of the Sanctuary of Lluc last week. The Lluc Archives are one of the most important documentary collections on the island.
The archive houses more than 10,000 scrolls, sheets, and documents, the oldest of which dates back to 1244. These documents chronicle centuries of Mallorcan history and have been consulted by researchers from around the world. Among its items are the Priory books, which attest to the existence of a coeducational school in Lluc in the 16th century, and a valuable collection of 17th and 18th-century sheet music used by the Blauets Choir.

During the visit, President Galmés emphasized that “the Consell de Mallorca has the responsibility to ensure the preservation of our historical and cultural heritage, and the Lluc archive is a treasure that we must preserve and make available to future generations.”
Specifically, the Mallorca Council announced a year ago that it would double the budget allocated to the Sanctuary of Lluc, from €35,000 to €70,000, to ensure the maintenance and digitalization of this unique historical legacy. Galmés also reported that this increase is to include the choir school.
For her part, the Vice President and Regional Minister of Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, emphasized “the importance of continuing with the conservation, planning, and digitization tasks, which are essential to guarantee the protection of these collections and, at the same time, facilitate their access and dissemination.” The Mayor of Escorca, Antoni Solivellas, expressed his gratitude for “the support of the Consell de Mallorca in the conservation of this archive, which is a heritage not only of Escorca, but of all of Mallorca.”
